How do you clean your laser printer toner?

Every once in a while you may want to clean out tour laser printer, it will help prolong the life of your printer especially if you use the printer on a daily basis. There are two phases of cleaning the toner from the printer. There is the cleaning of the outer case and then cleaning the inner case.

Cleaning the outer case is where to begin. To properly clean the laser printer you will need the following things, a soft cloth (no paper towels or napkins, they leave a scratchy surface) and specially made cleaning fluid made for this purpose. With some cases it is Ok to use water but check the manual just in case.

Turn the printer off and moisten the cloth with the cleaner and carefully wipe down the case only with the soft cloth. Wipe down the top, sides and doors of the laser printer. Just take care when cleaning and make sure that NO fluid gets inside the printer. You can use old scrap of clothing (make sure it is 100% cotton) to clean if you don’t have a special cleaning rag to clean the printer. In some cases, when you buy the cleaner a cleaning cloth will come with it.

Spray the cleaner on the cloth on directly on the printer; this is so that none of the cleaner gets inside the printer and one more tip do not use ammonia based cleaner. There will be cleaners specially made for cleaning a printer. Check with a store clerk if you are not sure.

Now you are set to clean the internal part of the printer. Make sure that the printer is unplugged. Take out the external paper trays; these don’t need to be cleaned as much, the goal for that is to clean the rolls that the paper comes through. Remove the toner cartridge and clean the area where the toner cartridge was held with a soft cloth NO cleaners. Clean the inside very carefully; they are very sensitive to the touch. Wipe off any excess dust from the toner cartridge. You can clean the rollers but do not touch a sponge roller at all. When you decide the clean the printer, don’t use the old cartridge, replace with new.
